Opening Workshop

Creating an Effective Safety Culture: No Longer a Choice

Sunday, Mar. 4, 7–10 a.m.

A safety culture is based on the attitudes, values, norms and beliefs that a particular group shares with respect to risk and safety. How can you create an environment where everyone feels responsible for safety and pursues it on a regular basis? One way to get started down that road is to attend this year's Opening Workshop.

The workshop, "Creating an Effective Safety Culture: No Longer a Choice," will be held Sunday, March 4, from 7-10 a.m. The speakers for the program are experts in the field of health and safety at some of the top universities and corporations in the nation.

The workshop will be presented in three components. The first examines what is a safety culture and discusses how to assess whether your company’s culture is effective.  The second part will feature a wide-ranging discussion on what people should know about effective safety cultures, and university research on developing a safety culture specifically for grain companies. Following a short break, the final section will assess the costs and benefits of established safety cultures, and includes a case study.

Speakers are: Mark Daniels, director of safety and health, CHS; Steve Simmons, associate vice president of agribusiness risk management, Nationwide Agribusiness; Michael Boland, professor of agricultural economics, University of Minnesota; Carol Jones, associate professor, stored product engineering, Oklahoma State University; Chris Goulart, director, consulting services, RCI; and Roger Price, vice president, California Business Group, J.D. Heiskell & Co.

The Opening Workshop has traditionally been an excellent way to gain information you can put to use immediately and this year is no exception.

All registered Exchange delegates are welcome to attend the program at no additional charge.
