K-State/OSHA Combustible Dust Workshops to Debut After Exchange in Louisville
MINNEAPOLIS and MANHATTAN, Kan. — GEAPS and Kansas State University announced that a free workshop aimed at reducing the number of grain dust explosions will be held immediately after GEAPS Exchange 2013 in Louisville, Ky. The workshop, set for Feb. 27, 2013, is one of a series of combustible dust workshops planned by K-State's Department of Grain Science & Industry and funded by a grant from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The Exchange, an international expo and technical conference held annually, is the largest meeting of its kind in the grain industry. In 2013, it will be held in Louisville, from Feb. 23-26, at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Exchange 2013 highlights include over 30 hours of focused educational programming for members of the agribusiness community, an expo hall boasting over 300 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in products and services and social functions providing ample networking opportunities.
"It is important to educate supervisors and managers on training their employees using best practices to curtail the risk of dust explosions," said Dirk Maier, professor and head of K-State’s Department of Grain Science and Industry. "This proposed activity will communicate practical risk information on dust hazards to mitigate fatalities and loss in grain handling and processing facilities."
R.P. Kingsly Ambrose, an assistant professor in the department and head of the OSHA grant application team, remarks, "The long-term goal of this team is to continue this effort of raising awareness about grain dust explosion hazards through training activities. We are collaborating with GEAPS to offer a distance education course on grain dust explosions starting in the fall of 2013."
