Distance Education, Scholarships, Exchange 2010 Among Topics at June IEC Meeting


The International Executive Committee (IEC) met in Minneapolis June 15-16 to discuss several measures in advance of the new GEAPS fiscal year, which began July 1.  Out of the day-and-a-half meeting, several initiatives were approved, many of which will offer new programs and benefits to members.

Distance Education Program


The IEC approved funding for four new distance-education courses in 2010.  The courses, previously approved by the Distance Education Program Oversight Committee, will be offered between Jan. 1 and July 4, 2010.  The courses (and their respective lead developers) are:

  • Quality Management Systems for Bulk Materials Handling Operations -- Dr. Charlie Hurburgh, Iowa State University
  • Stored Grain Pest Management Practices and Fumigation  -- Dr. Bhadriraju Subramanyam, Kansas State University
  • Hiring and Retaining Good Workers in the Grain Industry– Barb Quandt, West Central
  • Equipment Maintenance in the Grain Industry – Gary Sondgeroth, PMI LLC

Additionally, six current GEAPS-KSU courses will be offered again in 2010:
Safety Management

  • Grain Quality Management
  • Fundamentals of Ethanol Production
  • Electrical Safety for Grain Facilities
  • FGIS Grain Inspection Orientation
  • Aeration System Design

Exchange 2010

The IEC approved the Exchange 2010 sponsorship program as outlined.  Exchange 2010 will take place Feb. 20-23 at Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center in Wichita, Kan.  

Scholarships
2009 Harold Reese Grain Operations Scholarships
The IEC considered the applications received and approved $500 awards to five applicants ($2,500 total).  They are:

  • Blake Adams, to attend Kansas State University in fall 2009, Milling Science program; employed by Miller Milling Co.
  • Travis Davis, to enroll in graduate-level agribusiness-economics classes at Kansas State University in January 2010; employed by ADM.
  • Brandon Harvey, current student, University of Missouri-Columbia agricultural systems management program; summer intern with Bartlett Grain Company.
  • Ryan T. Harp, to attend Kansas State University in fall 2009, Department of Grain Science and Industry.
  • Carl Tharman, to attend Kansas State University in fall of 2009, Feed Science and Management program; intern with Bartlett Grain Co.

New Members

The IEC accepted the Membership Committee’s recommendation to produce official membership packets for new GEAPS members.  Packets will include a welcome letter, the current issue of In-Grain, information on upcoming GEAPS programs and events, information on using the member database, and other new member materials inside a GEAPS folder.
