Student Day Targets Next Generation at Exchange 2010
Student Day at GEAPS Exchange 2010 was held on Monday, Feb. 22, and by all accounts was a successful program for all who attended. Twenty feed science, agricultural engineering and grain science students from Kansas State University and the University of Missouri attended along with faculty from their schools to take part in the event. Dr. Leland McKinney, Extension State Leader at Kansas State University, brought 16 students and Dr. Joseph Zulovich, Professor and Extension Agricultural Engineer at University of Missouri, brought 4 students. Dr. Dirk Maier and Dr. Fred Fairchild, both of Kansas State University, were also in attendance.
The student group attended a special session, produced by the GEAPS Membership Committee in conjunction with KSU, targeted at their needs as emerging professionals in the grain handling and processing industry. Membership committee Chair Bill Jefferson, Sales Representative for Messick & Gray Inc, Bridgeville, Del., welcomed students and made opening remarks to the session. Four industry members made presentations:
• Sarah Muirhead, Editor and Publisher, Feedstuffs Magazine – “The Media Assault on the Ag Industry”
• Aaron Harries, Marketing Director, Kansas Wheat Commission – “The Future of Biotech Wheat”
• David Funk, Ph.D., D.Sc., Associate Director for Methods Development, USDA/GIPSA – “Current & Future Grain Quality Measurement Technologies”
• Judy Fadden, Security Manager/North American Operations, General Mills Inc – “Food Security”
Closing remarks were made by Membership committee member Daryl Watts.
Following the session, students toured of the Expo Hall to learn about equipment, become familiar with the industry’s largest trade show and experience firsthand the networking opportunities GEAPS offers.
