Dr. Carol Jones, PE, joined the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering faculty at Oklahoma State University in 2002 following an extensive career in production agriculture and materials handling design. She recently retired from her full-time professorship and now serves as an instructor with OSU’s Fire Service Training Grain Entrapment Rescue program. Dr. Jones is the owner of CL Jones Consulting LLC, where she provides grain handling and storage engineering, training, and forensic services. Her career combines academic expertise, industry experience, and hands-on training focused on improving safety and performance in grain handling and storage operations.

Course Description
Grain quality management is about the day-to-day decisions made at storage sites around the world. As grain moves through the facility from sampling, weighing, and grading to binning, drying, storage, and shipping – the choices made impact the quality, and therefore the profitability, for grain storage sites.
In this course, learners will explore various types of decisions and the impact they have on grain quality management. Learners will review some of the best practices used throughout the process. To gain insight into on-site responsibility, learners will complete a variety of scenarios and discover how decisions positively or negatively impact profitability.
This course builds awareness and decision-making skills that support — but do not replace — site-specific training. A learner’s site approach and best practices may differ from those in this course. Learners should always consult their site supervisor first.

Course Goals
In this course, learners will:

- Assess grain and the environment and determine appropriate actions necessary to limit risks and increase value.
By the end of this course, learners will answer the essential question: How do my decisions related to grain quality management relate to the profitability of my site?
Target Audience
Introduction to Grain Quality Management is designed for new and emerging supervisors responsible for maintaining grain quality in storage facilities. Rather than focusing only on procedures, this course helps learners understand the “why” behind grain quality. Learners gain the insight needed to protect product value, reduce risk, and support operational success.
Subject Matter Experts
Gretchen Mosher, Ph.D., is a professor at Iowa State University’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. She performs research in food system safety and traceability of commodity grains, with a focus on how humans interact with food and agricultural systems. She’s also interested in decision-making analysis within occupational safety and quality management systems. She teaches university students in quality management and senior design/capstone courses.
Kurt Rosentrater, Ph.D., SEA is a Professor at Iowa State University, and a food and bioprocess engineer whose work spans teaching, research, and industry collaboration. He also serves as a Visiting Professor at Polytech Montpellier and ISARA, and as an Adjunct Professor at Kansas State University. A multidisciplinary researcher and author, Dr. Rosentrater focuses on sustainable agricultural and food systems across grains, foods, biofuels, and bioproducts. Raised on an Iowa corn and soybean farm, he brings over 30 years of experience working with grain processing industries. His work applies engineering principles, techno-economic analysis (TEA), and life cycle assessment (LCA) to optimize systems and supply chains. He is the author of several books, including Storage of Cereal Grains and Their Products, and shares insights through his platform, The Cereal Grain Café.
Jim Voigt is the owner of JFV Solutions. He has nearly 50 years’ experience in the feed, grain and agricultural processing industries. He previously served as vice president of operations and engineering for ADM’s global grain division. While at ADM, Voigt cofounded the internal continuous improvement team and implemented lean/six sigma methodologies in ADM’s corn, oilseed, milling and cocoa divisions. He was responsible for regulatory compliance of the grain division regarding OSHA, EPA and the FDA. When he retired from ADM in 2012, Voigt started JFV Solutions, a consulting firm providing services to the grain and feed industry. He has been a member of GEAPS’ Cornbelt chapter since 1987. The former GEAPS’ board member and board president also was recognized as a Member of Distinction. Voigt also is a member of the Grain and Feed Association of Illinois, the National Grain and Feed Association and has authored numerous technical and management articles for publication. He has a green belt status in lean/six sigma, is certified in HACCP and as a Preventative Control Qualified Individual for Human and Animal Foods.
